Please welcome author Karen King today as she shares details of her latest release, Witch Angel.

 Author F&Qs
How did you get started writing?
I've always written. I had my first poem published when I was 11. I started my writing career with Jackie magazine, writing articles and photo stories.

Are you a Plotter or a Pantser?
It depends whether I'm writing to a commission or not. If I'm commissioned I have to plot as I have to send a synopsis and the first couple of chapters to my editor. If I'm not writing to a commission I work out the basic outline of my story then write 'by the seat of my pants.'

Are you most productive in the morning or evening?

Morning. Often I get out of bed and start writing straight away. I'm full of ideas in the morning.

Should Aluna betray her father to save the world?

Blurb
Aluna’s father is the Master Wizard of the Katalan. On her thirteenth birthday she is initiated into the coven and swears allegiance to her clan. Then she has a vision about the mother she has never known and a gold sceptre with an eagle’s head handle.

She discovers that the mysterious new girl, Raffie, who appeared out of nowhere is looking for the same sceptre. Aluna hopes the sceptre will lead her to her mother so swears an oath of friendship with Raffie, pledging to find it together only to discover that Raffie is Angleyt. They are sworn enemies.

Aluna’s father is looking for the sceptre too, as are the evil Bygnorim. Will Aluna really betray her father? What dreadful secret is he hiding about her mother? Aluna and Raffie face terrible danger in their quest. Are their combined powers strong enough or will Darke Magyck win?

Extract
Something woke Aluna in the middle of the night. She snuggled under the bedcovers trying to get back to sleep, but a niggling in her head told her something was wrong. She crept out of her room and out into the hall. She heard loud voices coming from downstairs.

She crept to the top of the stairs and peered down. Her father and Wizard Tal were standing in the hallway. Their voices were raised, but Aluna couldn’t hear what they were saying. She crept down the stairs, sitting down just before the bend so she could hear them but not be seen.

“You can’t do this, Sebastian,” she could hear the quiver in Tal’s voice. “It’s too dangerous. You can’t meddle with forces like this.”

“I’ll do whatever it takes to find the sceptre. And no one will stop me.”

She crept down further and peered through the gaps in the rails. Tal looked terrified. “How long have you been dabbling in this? Did Kristen know?” Tal said. Aluna saw a look of horror come over his face. “Is that why she disappeared. What did you do to her?”

Aluna put her hand over her mouth to stifle a scream. Had her father hurt her mother?

She gasped she saw her father point his wand at Tal and mutter something. Tal screamed and put his hand to his throat. He opened his mouth but no words came out. “At the moment you’ve just lost your voice,” her father said. “Go against me and you will lose your life.”

Aluna listened in horror as Tal scuttled off down the stairs. A few seconds later she heard her father walk back into his study and close the door behind him.

She stood up, shaking. She had never heard her father so angry. And to strike Tal, a dear friend, dumb like that. It was awful. Her head spun with questions.

Why was her father so angry?

What was Tal warning him about and what did he mean when he said he would do anything to find the sceptre. Why was it so important to him? What did he intend to do with it?

A chill ran through her as she remembered the look on her father’s face when he cast the spell on Tal. He’d looked almost…evil. As if he didn’t care what he did to anyone as long as he found the sceptre.

Had he hurt her mother? Is that why she’d left and never come back?

The White Lily, Book Two, The Harvester Series

Book Blurb: Sensuality Level: Sensual

The Harvester is out there...watching, waiting, biding his time.

FBI cult specialist Lilith Munroe lives in dread that one day the man who tortured her when a case went bad will find her again. So leaving her sanctuary in Quantico to join the Harvester Task Force in Boston is her version of hell. But the Harvester is kidnapping babies, and Lilith's profiling skills may mean the difference between life and death for the most innocent in society.

Australian millionaire and former member of the New Horizon commune Jacob Andrews returns to the United States searching for his sister. Instead of the happy reunion he expects, he discovers she is dead and his twin brother may be responsible. He agrees to lend his law enforcement skills to help find his former cult leader before the man can implement his plan to kill millions.

Now uneasy partners, Jacob and Lilith must learn to trust each other even as they fight their growing attraction. But when Lilith's greatest fears materialize, will Jacob be able to set aside his anger and save the woman he loves?

Excerpt:
The doors closed, and the elevator moved smoothly up to its destination, jerking to a stop as a bell sounded. When the doors slid open, they revealed a large room containing six desks and a floor-to-ceiling whiteboard covered in photographs and notes. Those disturbing pictures had been in the file she’d been given; some of them had shown up in last night’s dreams. Keeping it all together here, especially with that wall always on display, was going to be harder than she’d thought.

“Welcome to the bullpen. That’s our brainstorming area, but it hasn’t seen any action in months. My desk is the one on the right. That mess over there belongs to my partner Tom Adams. Believe it or not, he can find anything on there in seconds. Calls it organized chaos.”

She chuckled. “I work with a guy at Quantico with the same filing system. Where will I set up?”

“Not sure. Maybe at one of the empty desks here, or Trevor might let you use an interview room. It’ll depend on how much space you need. We have a few uniformed officers attached to us, too, but only two or three of them are here at any given time. Trevor’s office is down this hall.”

Rob knocked on the first closed door and opened it.

Special Agent Trevor Clark, task force leader, sat in a leather chair behind a massive oak desk. The man, broad shouldered with a headful of closely cropped, dark brown hair, looked up, took off his glasses, and rose to greet her. He held out his hand.

“Agent Munroe, I’m sorry for the short notice. Thanks for coming so quickly.”

“Agent Clark,” she said, reaching for his hand, her ice-queen mask firmly in place now. “I’d say it hadn’t been a problem if I had any reason to believe I belonged here.”

Rob cleared his throat. “I’ll be at my desk if you need me.”

“No, stay. You might as well hear this now.”

Trevor returned to his chair and indicated the one in front of his desk. Lilith sat, feeling like a delinquent child called into the principal’s office. Maybe she should try to curb the sarcasm and bitchiness. She had to work with these people whether she liked it or not.

“Call me Trevor. We’re informal up here, more like family, considering what we’ve been through. I don’t blame you for being miffed about this cloak and dagger secrecy, but after what happened ... How much do you know about Garett Pierce?”

“The man I’m supposed to be replacing? Just what’s in the file,” she answered. “Apparently, he was one of the agency’s top men, went rogue, and is now wanted on rape and murder charges. I’ve heard some office chitchat about him, but since I tend to keep to myself...” She shrugged.

“The man has given the FBI a black eye, making fools out of us.” Trevor’s anger was palpable. A glance at Rob’s clenched jaw and fisted hands showed he shared that opinion.

“I worked with him in New Mexico when I first started with the agency,” Trevor continued. “He served in Iraq where he earned himself a chest-full of medals. When he applied to the FBI, they accepted him without question. The man was a contradiction in terms, but got the job done—or at least we thought he did. Half the time, he looked like he’d slept in his clothes, but that was part of his persona. When these killings started, he volunteered as liaison between the FBI and Boston PD. I recommended him for that position, trusted his reports and his judgment, and almost got everyone killed. Tom Adams, the other detective who’s part of this team, saw through him right from the start. It took me a long time to believe Pierce was a traitor and a cold-blooded killer, but in the end, the proof of his guilt was undeniable. When he ran, he sealed his fate. Make no mistake, I want the Harvester or Prophet or whatever else he calls himself, but I want Pierce even more.”
